After a night out, the band rolled into their hotel room at about 5am. Jagger and Keith Richards were sharing a room, and in a drunken haze, Jagger decided to ring Charlie Watts’s room and yell at him down the phone. “Where’s my fucking drummer?” He said over and over, to not much of a response, before hanging up.
In the grand scheme of rock history, drummers tend to come and go throughout every band. If they didn’t write any of the songs and their only job was to just keep the time throughout the song, most fans would give a passive shrug if they found out their favourite band let go of someone behind the skins. In the genre’s golden age, every band member was important, and Charlie Watts knew he was seeing something special when he saw Keith Moon for the first time.

The Rolling Stones have never been known for some of the most complicated drum patterns ever. Although Charlie Watts was not going to get the same kind of accolades that Keith Moon and John Bonham got around the same time, his way of locking in with Keith Richards’s right hand every time the band played gave the group a signature swing that is never going to be reproduced again.
