Classic Album Review: Phil Collins Big Band | A Hot Night In Paris

Date : 2024,09,02 Mon.

Source : TINNITIST

Text : Darryl Sterdan

The good news: Phil Collins stays behind the  drum kit and doesn’t sing any insipid ballads. In fact, he doesn’t sing a note. The bad news: A Hot Night In Paris is so awful you’ll wish he had.

These pointless, lifeless jazz adaptations of his songs — do we really need big-band versions of Sussudio and Against All Odds? — sound like something you’d hear at a halftime pep rally or from a talk-show band during commercials. The surprising news: Despite being one of rock’s top stickmen, as a jazz drummer, Collins’ high-school band chops make Charlie Watts look like Gene Krupa. Hot? Not.

Besides being a fabulous guitarist, longtime Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood is an accomplished painter whose subjects often include fellow rock stars. Wood now is selling prints of one of his latest works, a portrait of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

One of his recent creations is a painting of late Stones drummer Charlie Watts that’s titled “Beat.” Wood is selling prints of “Beat” bundled with prints of the set list he created for The Rolling Stones’ final show with Watts. That concert took place on August 31, 2019, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The prints are hand-signed and numbered by Ronnie. The two-print bundles are priced at $1,000.

Charlie Watts on the Stones relationship with jazz (2001)

Date : 2024,09,04 Wed.

Source : ROLLING STONES DATA

“It does annoy me when people ignore jazz – Mick’ll say ‘We need a tenor player’ and I’ll say ‘Sonny Rollins’ – and he’s on our record next minute! And on the last tour we had Joshua Redman – we did a TV show with him – so in that I crusade a bit. I don’t mind dropping names – if someone asks me who’s a good drummer, I rarely mention rock drummers. I say ‘Kenny Clarke, Sonny Greer …’”

The band Charlie Watts thought defined American music: “That to me is America”

Date : 2024,09,18 Wed. 20:30

Source : FAR OUT

Text : Tim Coffman

For many rising British acts in the 1960s, America seemed like ‘The Emerald City’ in some respects. As much as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones represented all of the best aspects of British rock and roll, they knew that they wouldn’t have been there without hearing acts like Little Richard and Elvis Presley before them. Charlie Watts was never that kind of artist, though, and listening back through his record collection, he felt that the core American sound came from jazz artists like Charles Mingus.

Fats Domino: The only rock star Charlie Watts ever listened to

Date : 2024,09,24 Tue. 18:00

Source : FAR OUT

Text : Tim Coffman

There isn’t a set of rules that says rock stars must be friendly with one another. For every two bands that seem like artistic brothers joined at the hip, there are just as many that have bad blood with anyone who dares to cross their path on any good day. Each of The Rolling Stones managed to be quite friendly with many of their contemporaries, but in terms of recreational listening, Charlie Watts only had time for Fats Domino in his record collection.
