The good news: Phil Collins stays behind the drum kit and doesn’t sing any insipid ballads. In fact, he doesn’t sing a note. The bad news: A Hot Night In Paris is so awful you’ll wish he had.
These pointless, lifeless jazz adaptations of his songs — do we really need big-band versions of Sussudio and Against All Odds? — sound like something you’d hear at a halftime pep rally or from a talk-show band during commercials. The surprising news: Despite being one of rock’s top stickmen, as a jazz drummer, Collins’ high-school band chops make Charlie Watts look like Gene Krupa. Hot? Not.

Besides being a fabulous guitarist, longtime Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood is an accomplished painter whose subjects often include fellow rock stars. Wood now is selling prints of one of his latest works, a portrait of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
One of his recent creations is a painting of late Stones drummer Charlie Watts that’s titled “Beat.” Wood is selling prints of “Beat” bundled with prints of the set list he created for The Rolling Stones’ final show with Watts. That concert took place on August 31, 2019, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The prints are hand-signed and numbered by Ronnie. The two-print bundles are priced at $1,000.

“It does annoy me when people ignore jazz – Mick’ll say ‘We need a tenor player’ and I’ll say ‘Sonny Rollins’ – and he’s on our record next minute! And on the last tour we had Joshua Redman – we did a TV show with him – so in that I crusade a bit. I don’t mind dropping names – if someone asks me who’s a good drummer, I rarely mention rock drummers. I say ‘Kenny Clarke, Sonny Greer …’”

Instead, Richards chose to espouse the importance of his rhythm section. “There is an incredible chemistry with The Stones. I don’t want to analyse it,” he said before adding: “To me, Charlie Watts is the foundation of it all because that’s what I work off of, and we’ve been doing it all our lives.” As the drummer for The Rolling Stones from their early days in 1963 all the way up until his unfortunate death in 2021,

“A few years later, a friend called me and said, ‘I heard Bill Wyman is leaving the Stones.’ And there the saga began. I auditioned for them a couple of times, and they hired me. I got the nod from all of them. Charlie (Watts) felt that I took the music quite seriously, and he was impressed by that.”

In September 2023, Christie’s auction house sold the extraordinary library of modern first editions assembled by Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2021), including a near-complete collection of Agatha Christie first editions. Mark Wiltshire, specialist in rare books and head of the Charlie Watts sale, talks about the market for Agatha Christie collectables, with special attention paid to the power of inscriptions, provenance, and condition.
For many rising British acts in the 1960s, America seemed like ‘The Emerald City’ in some respects. As much as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones represented all of the best aspects of British rock and roll, they knew that they wouldn’t have been there without hearing acts like Little Richard and Elvis Presley before them. Charlie Watts was never that kind of artist, though, and listening back through his record collection, he felt that the core American sound came from jazz artists like Charles Mingus.
The new edition, available December 6th via Universal Music Group, marks a year since the Stones’ first studio set of original material since 2005 was released. The album featured late drummer Charlie Watts on two tracks, “Mess It Up” and “Live By The Sword” alongside Bill Wyman, Paul McCartney, and Elton John.

British luxury menswear brand Sunspel has opening a flagship store on London’s high-end Jermyn Street. And with it comes the launch of its novel ‘Bespoke T-shirt' service.
Exclusive to the new store, the service offers customers the opportunity to create their own T-shirt, “drawing on the brand’s rich T-shirt-making heritage which dates to the early 1900s”.
The programme extends a service the brand says it has long offered stylists, costume designers and celebrities (including Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones and actor Daniel Craig’s James Bond persona).
There isn’t a set of rules that says rock stars must be friendly with one another. For every two bands that seem like artistic brothers joined at the hip, there are just as many that have bad blood with anyone who dares to cross their path on any good day. Each of The Rolling Stones managed to be quite friendly with many of their contemporaries, but in terms of recreational listening, Charlie Watts only had time for Fats Domino in his record collection.

IT was 60 years ago this week that the Rolling Stones played to screaming fans at Bradford’s Gaumont dancehall.
John Heffron was there, aged 20. He recalls fans taking along bags of jelly babies, prompted by a music paper article claiming the band liked the sweets: “When they started playing they got bombarded with jelly babies - Charlie Watts’ drum kit was covered with them. The Stones were laughing their heads off.”

“When people talk about the ’60s I never think that was me there. It was me and I was in it, but I was never enamoured with all that. It’s supposed to be sex and drugs and rock and roll and I’m not really like that. I’ve never really seen the Rolling Stones as anything.”

Longtime Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Jones reflected on the nuances of entering the pocket with Charlie Watts, and explained how the legendary rock band goes about creating music.
Of course, calling Mr. Jones the Stones' bassist doesn't even begin to cover the scope of the 62-year-old bassist's career,
