Mick Jagger has always been something more than himself alone: dionysiac, androgynous, in total command of the stage and very, very sexy, he was, and is, glamour incarnate and charisma personified. In fact, I tell him, he’s the apotheosis of the rock star: “That’s very nice,” he says, his 66-year-old voice simultaneously emphatic and slurred, the “nice” as camp and sardonic as anything Kenneth Williams ever essayed. He’s sitting in a panelled room in a Georgian house in Wandsworth; on the walls are paintings by his daughter Jade and a terrific black-and-white photograph of Elvis. “Did someone give me that?” he muses. “Charlie [Watts] give me that? I think it might be Charlie gave me that.”
In “Beast of Burden,” all the elements of a classic Rolling Stones song are there. The guitar interplay is a constant throughout, while the classic, driving Charlie Watts beat is relentless.
The band performed over 80 songs on this tour from all eras of the band’s history. Mick Jagger played guitar, harmonica and keyboards at various stops. Keith Richards, stellar on guitar and vocals, provided both visual and musical highlights throughout the night. On stage right, Ron Wood’s complimentary guitar work weaves seamlessly with Richards’ playing. Drummer Charlie Watts [1941-2021], as always, was the heart’n’soul backbeat that drove the band forward.

Charlie Watts, LA Memorial Sports Arena, December 1965.
“We piss anywhere, man,” Jagger was reported to have said in response to the outrage over the group’s al fresco micturition in Forest Gate, March 1965 (which cost Jagger, Jones and Wyman a fiver each, plus costs at West Ham magistrates court). It’s hard to imagine the gentlemanly drummer actually relieving himself in a sink, so maybe he’s taking the piss.

The musical relationship between the late Charlie Watts and Mike Jagger bordered on telepathic. The Rolling Stones instinctively knew how the other would respond in any given situation, providing an edge to their performances that helped the group become the most electrifying live band on the planet.

Charlie Watts on Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (1998)
“I’m lucky to have been with these two. There’s a magic about them that people like. They always argue, but they always love each other. They know each other so well. When I say they argue, they don’t actually, but there’s always a difference of opinion.

Charlie Watts, about tour manager Sam Cutler introducing the Stones as ‘The Greatest Rock ’N’ Roll Band In The World’ in 1969
“I didn’t believe it. What about Little Richard? Then you have Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino, Chuck Berry’s studio band – there isn’t a better rock ’n’ roll band. That’s where we got it from. ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ by everybody else is a joke.

Before long, Furmanovsky was shooting the biggest rock stars of the 1970s and 80s, including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Ramones, Eric Clapton, Blondie and The Clash as they graced the Rainbow Theatre stage. She also took some early images of the Sex Pistols.
But by 1991, she was thinking of giving up on photography, because her studio was too expensive to run and it was "quite a tough time for me".
One of her photographs - a picture of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts in Q magazine - helped save her career, though.

Charlie Watts, Long View Farm, 1981
‘Despite spending days at Long View Farm, the group’s enigmatic drummer Charlie Watts studiously avoided my camera. I photographed the other band members but Charlie was always absent.
